Sabine Wiedenhofer Artistic Vision and Biography
An artist working across different media, Sabine Wiedenhofer explores themes related to contemporary society by embracing a multidisciplinary practice that speaks an experimental visual language. Moving between painting and sculpture, her art originates in a deep personal interest in the human condition as she addresses questions aimed at a world in disarray. The alarming status quo of global affairs thus acts as the point of departure for her creative practice which she orientates towards a vision of art as a tool to speak up and to call out the mishaps, grievances and deficiencies of a defunct system. Against the consequences of a ruthless ethos of exploitation - economically, politically and socially - Sabine Wiedenhofer‘s message is anchored in a plea for togetherness and cooperation. Hers is the bold belief in an alternative future marked by joint action and combined effort. It thereby is the artist‘s duty to lend a visual voice to society, devising scenarios for an exodus of a precarious existence that only as a shared endeavour will come with a lasting impact.

This is the context for the ‘Suspended Words‘ series in which Sabine Wiedenhofer arranges emptied cartridges nto humorous wall sculptures that raise pertinent questions around pressing issues without imposing answers. Rather, the respective works read as invitations to rethink and to (re)act by virtue of absurd juxtaposition. By integrating the bullet casings in unexpected semantic contexts, she uses the ‘aesthetics of violence‘ in a poetic way to send out a message for change.

In recent years, her artistic sensitivity has drawn her to glass as a medium whose potential she harnesses for creative expression. Her sculptures thereby unfold as thought-provoking interventions at the interplay of materiality, light and colour. Among the vitreous creations it is TriBeC 2017 / NYC where her virtuous and intimate use of the medium comes to the fore. Through the installation, Sabine Wiedenhofer reflects on the eventful history of a place that more than a city occupies a space in the shared global imagination as an icon of people coming together from all walks of life. Cast in translucent glass, the ensemble of skyscrapers dialogue as a crystalline idea of the city which shot through with light unfolds as a constantly changing epiphany of alternating perspectives for an endless act of looking at - and through - an urban vision.

Als Künstlerin, die mit verschiedenen Medien arbeitet, erforscht Sabine Wiedenhofer Themen im Zusammenhang mit der zeitgenössischen Gesellschaft, indem sie eine multidisziplinäre Praxis anwendet, die eine experimentelle Bildsprache spricht. Ihre Kunst, die sich zwischen Malerei und Skulptur bewegt, entspringt einem tiefen persönlichen Interesse am menschlichen Zustand, während sie sich mit Fragen befasst, die auf eine Welt in Unordnung abzielen. Der alarmierende Status quo der globalen Angelegenheiten dient somit als Ausgangspunkt für ihre kreative Praxis, die sie an einer Vision von Kunst als einem Werkzeug orientiert, um ihre Stimme zu erheben und die Missgeschicke, Missstände und Mängel eines nicht mehr existierenden Systems anzuprangern. Gegen die Folgen eines rücksichtslosen Ausbeutungsethos – wirtschaftlich, politisch und gesellschaftlich – ist Sabine Wiedenhofers Botschaft in einem Plädoyer für Zusammengehörigkeit und Zusammenarbeit verankert. Sie ist der kühne Glaube an eine alternative Zukunft, die von gemeinsamem Handeln und gemeinsamen Anstrengungen geprägt ist. Dabei ist es die Aufgabe des Künstlers, der Gesellschaft eine visuelle Stimme zu verleihen und Szenarien für einen Exodus aus einer prekären Existenz zu entwerfen, die nur als gemeinsames Unterfangen nachhaltige Wirkung entfalten kann.
Dies ist der Kontext für die Serie „Suspended Words“, in der Sabine Wiedenhofer leere Patronen zu humorvollen Wandskulpturen arrangiert, die relevante Fragen zu drängenden Themen aufwerfen, ohne Antworten aufzudrängen. Vielmehr lesen sich die jeweiligen Werke als Aufforderungen zum Umdenken und zum (Re-)Handeln durch absurde Gegenüberstellungen. Indem sie die Patronenhülsen in unerwartete semantische Kontexte einbindet, nutzt sie die „Ästhetik der Gewalt“ auf poetische Weise, um eine Botschaft für Veränderung zu senden.

Ihre künstlerische Sensibilität hat sie in den letzten Jahren zum Medium Glas geführt, dessen Potenzial sie für kreativen Ausdruck nutzt. Ihre Skulpturen entfalten sich dabei als zum Nachdenken anregende Interventionen im Zusammenspiel von Materialität, Licht und Farbe. Unter den gläsernen Kreationen ist es TriBeC 2017 / NYC, wo ihr tugendhafter und intimer Umgang mit dem Medium im Vordergrund steht. Mit der Installation reflektiert Sabine Wiedenhofer die wechselvolle Geschichte eines Ortes, der mehr als eine Stadt als Symbol für das Zusammenkommen von Menschen aus allen Lebensbereichen einen Raum in der gemeinsamen globalen Vorstellung einnimmt. Das in durchscheinendes Glas gegossene Ensemble der Wolkenkratzer steht im Dialog als kristalline, lichtdurchflutete Idee der Stadt und entfaltet sich als ständig wechselnde Epiphanie wechselnder Perspektiven für einen endlosen Akt des Betrachtens – und Durchschauens – einer städtischen Vision.
